Remote Desktop CLI tips

Remote Desktop - Tips, Tricks, and what you didn't know you could do. - Windows Central Forums

Most people like to just use the default Remote Desktop Application found in Windows XP. Some prefer to use the RUN command off the START Menu.

Personally I use both since on my desktop with two monitors I can have multiple Remote Desktop's running with little problem but, on my laptop screen space is at a premium so I use the command line to set certain variables for the remote desktop sessions. This allows me to size the individual Remote Desktop Sessions to fit my needs and also gets around the global remote desktop settings.

**Note – Microsoft has released a new version of Remote Desktop for Windows XP SP2. If you have NOT upgraded you might want to. Visit the Windows Update page and look under “Recommended”, you should see it listed there.

Example:

Say I need three Remote Desktop Sessions on my laptop. Instead of using the Remote Desktop GUI interface I'll use the command line to stipulate certain screen sizes for each session.

mstsc /v: myserver /w:640 /h:480 (window size is 600x480)
mstsc /v: myserver2 /w:800 /h:600 (window size 800x600)
mstsc /v: myserver3 /w:1024 /h:768 (window size 1024x768)

Other variables you can pass via the command line are:

/console (useful when you need to connect to Windows 2000 Machines – you MUST have the remote desktop software installed on the Win2000 machine: - Remote desktop for Windows 2000 and Older Clients

Idea from the latest DSC

I really enjoyed the latest DSC podcast with Steve, and I did listen to the
whole thing! There is one flaw that I see in podcasting that is similar
to the flaw that allowed the consultants to take over FM. That is the
cost of entry. The cost of entry in FM was the transmitter. People
can today get micro transmitters similar to your 100watt transmitter
that you loaned the troops in Iraq, but they have no impact. It is
the big guys that have impact.

The same problem WILL plauge podcasting unless we act. The problem is
bandwidth, as the Strategycast showed. That is the cost of entry
that could kill a mass market for podcasting. There are multiple ways
around this such as bittorrent, and it is not as complex as you think.
As you said podcasting is like tivo for audio, and bittorrent + rss
is like tivo for torrents. There are already clients that show this.
Look at clients like videora. To marry the two and make it automagic
to download content to a computer based on feeds, and below that
search criteria.

Check it out and please let me know what you think..

I love (free) WIFI

I have been spending a lot of time out of the house lately. I have a chapter due to my publisher Monday for my book. I have to get away from the house to write and research. The kids are too much distraction. I have gone to three places locally to write, and use their free WIFI. I have been very productive, and I can find great music on the net to listen to (currently listening to BBC Radio 6.

The strangest place was Krystal, but free is free. After that I graduated to Panera Bread. This was very nice. Great food and ambiance, but I spent way too much money and ate way too much food. My main complaint about both of these establishments is the lack of plugs. Batteries are laim. At Panera I found a socket in the CEILING. Well whatever works.

I have now moved on to KSU. The ambiance isn't great and the food is eh, but they have WIFI in many of the buildings and lots of plugs.

Tsunami videos

I see pleas from bloggers about bandwidth problems because they are hosting tsunami video files. Why aren't they using bittorrent instead of hosting the files locally? It is the fastest and least impact way to host files. After starting the seed they would only be hit with a few Kb each time someone downloads the file(s)

For example, you can get them via other sites on bittorrent

It is not like bittorrent is hard to use. I use it all the time to download Linux media.

Maximizing Firefox

I have had two complaints about my favorite browser firefox. The first was that it takes up a huge amount of ram and doesn't give it back. The second was that if you minimize it for any amount of time at all it take forever to bring the window back up while it swaps the memory back in. I ran across an incredibly helpful article that addresses both of these and give other hints on maximizing the performance and usability of firefox.

Fix a memory leak in Firefox 1.0
Firefox is supposed to dynamically release memory from its RAM cache to other Windows applications as needed. Unfortunately, Firefox 1.0 seems to consume more memory than it should, which hurts performance, when set to the default of 51200 Kb (51 MB).

To solve this, Firefox power users recommend limiting the memory cache using the Configuration Console. This frees up memory for other apps, speeding up everything to a greater or a lesser extent, depending on your machine and the applications you run. Here's how the trick works:

Step 1. Type about:config into Firefox's Address Bar and press Enter.

Step 2. Right-click any row, then click New, Integer. Type or paste the following preference name into the dialog box that appears (this is a hidden preference that doesn't exist in the Configuration Console until you create it):

browser.cache.memory.capacity

Step 3. Click OK, then enter the following integer number into the next dialog box, representing 16 MB of RAM for the cache:

16000

Step 4. Click OK to close the dialog box, then close all instances of Firefox and restart it.

For a lengthy discussion of this option, see Mozillazine's forum topic 172041.

and

Speeding up the maximizing of Firefox
By default, when you minimize Firefox, it gives back to Windows most of the RAM the browser was using. It sometimes can take several seconds for the browser window to become fully loaded when you restore the window to its original size. This is one of those "version 1.0" things, in my opinion, that will become more streamlined in future bump revs of the program.

Fortunately, there's a hidden setting that can accomplish the restoration of Firefox windows much more quickly:

Step 1. Use about:config to create a new, Boolean value. Type or paste the following string into the dialog box that appears:

config.trim_on_minimize

Step 2. Click OK to close the dialog box. Change the value from "true" to "false" and restart Firefox.

This doesn't piggishly retain all of the RAM that Firefox has claimed. If Windows needs more RAM to devote to another application, Windows can take it. What the setting does is prevent Firefox from giving up most of its RAM until the memory is actually required elsewhere.

Setting this item to "false" may noticeably slow down other applications while Firefox is minimized, if your PC has less than 256 MB of RAM. If so, change the setting back to "true."

There's an extremely long discussion about the development of this trick, going back to March 2004 (and continuing up through today), in Bugzilla bug report #76831. If you're determined to delve into this, I'd recommend starting with comment 329.

Speeding up Firefox on Windows XP
You can speed up the loading of Firefox on Windows XP by adding it to the programs that XP "prefetches."

To do this, right-click the Start Menu item for Firefox, or any icon you use to start Firefox, and open the Properties dialog box. Add a space plus /Prefetch:1 to the command line and click OK. The resulting line might look as follows:

"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" /Prefetch:1

A detailed explanation of XP's prefetch feature is provided by TechRepublic.

Xlivecd blows me away.

xlivecd is a concept turned 90 degrees. It takes the concept of Linux live cds (like knoppix, and applies it to application software.

XLiveCD allows users of Microsoft Windows to connect to remote Unix computers, run graphical applications and have the graphics displayed on their desktops. The software runs from the CD without being installed. XLiveCD was prepared by University Technology Services to facilitate use of research Unix systems at Indiana University by Windows users on campus.

and

In the parlance of Unix, an X server is run from the CD. A secure shell (ssh) client is included, and it is configured to allow by default forwarding of graphics from X11 applications. Users run the ssh client to connect to the remote machine, and X11 graphics are forwarded automatically from X applications that are run. The X server is that by X.org, and the ssh client is openssh.

It uses cygwin and wizard apprentice to accomplish this. There may be other applications with this concept, but i haven't seen them. The closest is probably portable mozilla software from John Haller. The difference between these two is that the mozilla software is meant to be run from a removable usb drive (usually key based).

Bittorrent vs Hollywood

Looks like the media is starting to notice BitTorrent. ABC news has a story about how Hollywood is starting to worry the same way mp3.com and napster work up the music industry and the RIAA. The MPA is certainly giving BitTorrent it's due. From the article:

"BitTorrent is more of a threat because it is probably the latest and best technological tool for transferring large files like movies," said John Malcolm, senior vice president of anti-piracy operations for the Motion Picture Association of America. "It is unusual, perhaps unique, in that the moment you start downloading you are also uploading," he added. "It's what makes it so efficient."

Http status codes

here is a great docs on apache status codes. I was having a lot of 206's returned. I didn't realize that anything in the 200's is successful

Successful

200 - OK
The 200 status code is by far the most common returned. It means, simply, that the request was received and understood and is being processed.

201 - Created
A 201 status code indicates that a request was successful and as a result, a resource has been created (for example a new page).

202 - Accepted
The status code 202 indicates that server has received and understood the request, and that it has been accepted for processing, although it may not be processed immediately.

203 - Non-Authoritative Information
A 203 status code means that the request was received and understood, and that information sent back about the response is from a third party, rather than the original server. This is virtually identical in meaning to a 200 status code.

204 - No Content
The 204 status code means that the request was received and understood, but that there is no need to send any data back.

205 - Reset Content
The 205 status code is a request from the server to the client to reset the document from which the original request was sent. For example, if a user fills out a form, and submits it, a status code of 205 means the server is asking the browser to clear the form.

206 - Partial Content
A status code of 206 is a response to a request for part of a document. This is used by advanced caching tools, when a user agent requests only a small part of a page, and just that section is returned.

Cheap n easy way to kill em all.

From tech-recipes.com:

Description
This recipe is useful when one wants to kill all the processes belonging to one user or having a particular regular expression in the process name. One can use different options of "ps" and "grep" to kill the undesired process(es).

Directions
The following is the general syntax of this recipe

ps -u <username> | grep <processname_pattern> | awk '{print $1}' |    xargs kill  -9

ps -u will find all the processes of the user username.
This output is then greped for processname_pattern which is then piped to awk.
awk '{print $1}' will print only the first column of the output (the process-id, in this case).
This is then xargd to the kill with sure kill -9 signal.

As a result, all the undesired processes will be killed.

Note : One should give the processname_pattern carefully as an incorrect
regular expression may lead to even desired processes being killed.

Unix tools free from Microsoft?

Check out What's New in Windows Services for UNIX 3.5. Micro$oft has released the latest version of Windows Services for UNIX free (as in beer). It looks like a neat set of tools. I will have to test it vs. cygwin.

Cool tool

pdftk

If PDF is electronic paper, then pdftk is an electronic staple-remover, hole-punch, binder, secret-decoder-ring, and X-Ray-glasses. Pdftk is a simple tool for doing everyday things with PDF documents. Keep one in the top drawer of your desktop and use it to:

* Merge PDF Documents
* Split PDF Pages into a New Document
* Decrypt Input as Necessary (Password Required)
* Encrypt Output as Desired
* [new!] Fill PDF Forms with FDF Data and/or Flatten Forms
* [new!] Apply a Background Watermark
* Report on PDF Metrics, including Metadata and Bookmarks
* [new!] Update PDF Metadata
* [new!] Attach Files to PDF Pages or the PDF Document
* [new!] Unpack PDF Attachments
* Burst a PDF Document into Single Pages
* Uncompress and Re-Compress Page Streams
* Repair Corrupted PDF (Where Possible)

Pdftk is also an example of how to use a library of Java classes in a stand-alone C++ program. Specifically, it demonstrates how GCJ and CNI allow C++ code to use iText's (itext-paulo) Java classes.

Dick Van Dyke - CGI Animator?

I have always been a fan of Dick Van Dyke. The story of his involvment in computer animation just enahances that. So many seasoned citizens are afraid of technology. It is great to see the wonderful results when someone with Mr. Van Dyke's experience embraces a new medium.

EFF and the broadcast flag

From the EFF:

Join the Television Liberation Digital Front!

Today, you can use any device you like with your television: VCR, TiVo, DVD recorder, home theater receiver, or a PC combining these functions and more. A year from now, when the FCC's broadcast flag mandate [PDF] takes effect, some of those capabilities will be forbidden.

and also:

Here's where you can help. The folks at www.pcHDTV.com make an HD-capable (ATSC) tuner card with Linux drivers. The MythTV project has built a terrific personal video recorder (PVR) platform that gives a GNU/Linux PC features like TiVo's pause live TV and "season pass" recording. These are great for geeks, and we're looking for volunteers to help make the combination more accessible to the general public.

New netgear wireless hub.

Neat new product from netgear.

From designtechnica:

Netgear, Inc. today announced the launch of the breakthrough WGR101 54 Mbps Wireless Travel Router, a pocket-size 802.11g router to enable wireless access during travel. In addition to delivering up to 54 Mbps wireless Internet access when linked to an existing wired Ethernet connection, such as found in a hotel room or conference room, the WGR101 also provides the added security of a “double firewall” along with routing functionality, and can be used in both single and multi-user environments. Capable of providing up to five times the data throughput speed and twice the range of 802.11b wireless networking solutions, the small, attractive WGR101 has an internal antenna that eliminates the concern of breakage during packing or transport. A convenient carrying case is also included, enabling users to easily pack and carry the router and other essential accessories when they travel.

The wisdom of the Iron Lady

From this weeks Time Magazine:

An examination of the guest book from Blair House, where Nancy stayed last week, showed that Thatcher's touch for brevity and devotion was still intact, though she did not have the strength to talk in the cathedral and had them play her recorded speech. "To Ronnie," she wrote. "Well done, thou good and faithful servant."

Crop rotation makes me dizzy.

I need to get two more beds going so I can start a proper crop rotation going. Especially since I am growing tomatoes and peppers. I have two beds going now. I figure that two more and I can rotate a crop through a bed a year. I use a combination of raised beds placed on 6 inch depressions I dug out. Digging out is the worst. We have very hard red clay.

Tivo alternatives

From Clark Howard:

A cheaper alternative to Tivo
Personal video recorders such as Tivo and Replay TV have reached almost cult-like status these days. These services are expensive,
though. Usually, people have to buy the device, pay a licensing fee of about $250 and pay a monthly charge to get the service. But companies
are coming up with less costly alternatives that function just like Tivo using your home computer. Basically, you buy software and install
it on your home computer, which becomes the brains of the operation. You can then buy adapters to hook up to your TV and youre good to go.
One of the products is called Beyond TV3 and it costs $80. You can try it for a few weeks for free, and then buy it if you like it. It
includes all of the functions of Tivo, plus a skip commercial feature. Clark is going to try out one of these services and let you know how
it goes.

I have also seen the MediaMVP talked about recently. This is not really a direct competetor for the Tivo, but it is interesting.

MediaMVP Features:

  • Access digital music, videos or pictures from your TV set, over your home network.

  • Uses 10Mbit or 100Mbit Ethernet, for the best network performance with any type of digital media. Plays DVD quality videos on your TV set over an Ethernet LAN!

  • Composite and S-Video outputs for the best video quality on TV sets, plus stereo audio output to TV sets or home theater systems.

  • Watch digital camera pictures (JPEG or GIF) on your TV set. Play slide shows with music, too!

  • Plays MP3 music, either individual titles, all the music titles in a directory or M3U, B4S, PLS and ASX playlists.

  • Plays MEPG-1 and MPEG-2 recordings made with the Hauppauge WinTV-PVR's. Will also play most other MPEG-1/2 standard video files. With MediaMVP’s remote control, you can pause, rewind and fast forward through your recorded videos.

  • Remote control for easy access to your PC media from your TV set. MediaMVPs remote control allows you to navigate through your PCs disk drives, and displays media names, directories and other information on the TV set. MediaMVPs remote also can control the audio volume and mute of videos and music being played.

WEP beware

AirSnort is a wireless LAN (WLAN) tool which recovers encryption keys. AirSnort operates by passively monitoring transmissions, computing the encryption key when enough packets have been gathered...802.11b, using the Wired Equivalent Protocol (WEP), is crippled with numerous security flaws...AirSnort requires approximately 5-10 million encrypted packets to be gathered. Once enough packets have been gathered, AirSnort can guess the encryption key used.

Mizpelld Spaam

The Nytimes has an interesting article about misspellings as a positive view of spam fighting. Their view is that the messages are becoming so unintelligible as to be useless.

This got me thinking. I wonder if you could use the number of misspelled words as a filter? After X misspelled words the email is quarantined. It is an interesting thought. I don't know what the proper number would be, but it should work relatively well. I wonder how you could integrate a dictionary into a spam filter? The only problem would be a lot of jargon or abbreviations would trigger it. You could possibly add a custom dictionary. The other thought is to set up a phrase that would by pass the checks and give that to friends to include at the end of their emails. This secret phrase would be different for each person. It would have to be a non dictionary string so it couldn't be included by accident.

Recovery discovery?

It appears that HP and Cisco are thinking that 2004 is starting to shape up as a decent year for IT spending. After several years of bad news it is nice to hear something different. Of course, one terrorist attack in the US and all is called into question. The sword of Damocles is still there.

Sco to close shop and become law firm?

I do not understand why SCO is pursuing this strategy? They are acknowledging that it is hurting what you would think is their core business. Now they want to sue Novell. At first I thought this was a gambit to be purchased. Now I don't know what it is.

It is like a bad soap opera...
