Steps

I walked 8188 steps yesterday. I was stuck at about 3500 at dinner so we went for a walk and ended up picking blackberries. It was really hot but we had fun (except for all the scratches).

Another SuSE annoyance

Editing scripts with Vim gives a good hint on enabling color in vim. SuSE has it disabled by default. I am not sure why. Annoying.

" We use a vim
set nocompatible
"
" Colo(u)red or not colo(u)red
" If you want color you should set this to true
"
let color = "true"
"
if has("syntax")
if color == "true"
" This will switch colors ON
so ${VIMRUNTIME}/syntax/syntax.vim
else
" this switches colors OFF
syntax off
set t_Co=0
endif
endif
set textwidth=75
set autoindent
set tabstop=8
set expandtab
set shiftwidth=4
filetype indent on
" ~/.vimrc ends here

My daughter before her first ballet recital.

They did one number with all of the classes, and one piece named

"Starlight Starbright" that was jsut her class. It was very cute.

How to install vmware 5 under Suse

After banging my head against the wall I found this from LinuxQuestions.org - Step by Step way to make SUSE 9.3 VMWARE ready ?? - where Linux users come for help

When SuSe runs the kernel it adds a gzipped ram image of the kernel .config file in /proc

login as root
cd /usr/src/linux-2.6.8-24.14
cp /proc/config.gz config.gz
gunzip config.gz
mv config .config

make prepare-all
now run vmware-config.pl to build the modules. Vmware should work fine. I have 5.0 running with SuSe 9.2 however VMware may not support the kernel in Suse 9.3

This document from SuSE also has similar steps.

Barbara Walters is a boob

From Michelle Malkin: MOMMYBLOGGING: ON THE BOOB TUBE

It seems that Babs objects to eating in public. I don't get it. Why are people so freaked out? I can understand objecting to sexuality in public but nutrition?

Disabled trackbacks

I have now disabled trackback pings. They were pretty useless and have become a major spam conduit.

Dill Weed

Growing Delightful Dill is a helpful article. I have been having great success with almost everything I am growing this year except dill. I have had a big die back. I am still not sure why. I will post a picture later. Maybe someone can tell me why.

The death of enviroliberalism?

The death of enviroliberalism? from the Gristmill is an article I am glad to see. It makes two salient points:

First, we are way too focused on domestic problems (thinking only locally and acting only locally). And second, I think environmentalism is far too monolithically liberal, which both hurts us politically and also impedes our ability to come up with good policy solutions.

I generally consider myself a green elephant. I think that the GOP is way too developer friendly, and reflexively against any environmental policy. I think this is because the environmentalists are reflexively socialist. I would love to see someone in the GOP come up with some innovative policies.

Installing Debian on a HP Compaq NC6000 Laptop is a good guide to installing Debian on this laptop. This is the laptop I have.

Fedora Core 4 out

Well it looks like FC4 is out. There is a torrent available as well. One interesting idea is to update via yum. You can check it out at the YumUpgradeFaq - Fedora Project Wiki

Update: I found that this site actually had more detailed information.

Spoofstick

SpoofStick makes it harder for a fake site to try to phish you. I seem to get more and more of this crap in the mail. I am sure there are plenty of savvy people that get nailed with this junk. Some of the human engineering that these creeps do is slick. BE WARY.

WTC 2

I have hated all the designs for the new WTC site. I ran across this site the other day. I think this would be a perfect replacement.

World to end tomorrow. Linux hit hardest.

Why does it seem that a major development in the computer biz always leads John Dvorak to say it will hit Linux the hardest. He is definiately a playa hater. Those who can do.... I am so tired of these effite mac biggots.

Great gardening tips

North Country Maturing Gardener: Does Your Garden Overwhelm You? Try this! is a great post. It has some nice tips on ways to make gardening easier.

My favorites:

1. I try to only plant perennials, with a few annuals thrown in for color. Perennials take care of themselves and get better every year!

4. Use a HEAVY layer of mulch around all your garden beds! You’ll have far fewer weeds and it looks great, not to say it’s wonderful for the plants as well!

HEAVY layer of mulch

Excerpt:

  • I try to only plant perennials, with a few annuals thrown in for color. Perennials take care of themselves and get better every year!
  • This phenomenon young mother's are struggling with is exactly why I began to get help with the house! My choice was to garden rather than clean house, which I always considered a hateful job. So, if you need help, decide what you’d like to do LESS and get help with that! Also, if you get that help with house work, it allows you to be outside with your kids and dog, rather than having them watch you scrub toilets!
  • DON’T worry about how the garden looks. It’ll be there when you have time...just like dirty dishes!
  • Use a HEAVY layer of mulch around all your garden beds! You’ll have far fewer weeds and it looks great, not to say it’s wonderful for the plants as well!
  • If possible, have that big, strong husband of yours cut the grass and help with weeding. That will leave you with some more open time to garden. If he doesn’t want to do that, hire a kid to cut it for you. You can also pay someone to weed for you...but I have found that often they don’t really know what the difference is, and you end up unhappy.
  • Do have your little children (and older ones too!) help you pull dandelions and other OBVIOUS weeds. It will look better (and since s/he’s pulling the flowers, they don’t have a chance to set seed.) The weeds will eventually die out. AND it gives her/him a sense of purpose.
  • I never hired a gardener because they tend to be very free with chemicals and hedge clippers. NOT a good combination.
  • Remember that a garden should be for your enjoyment! If that’s not the case, begin to phase OUT some of the garden...and just plant ground cover instead (like pachysandra) until the day comes when you’re ready, and then just pull the groundcover out and plant what you want. Maybe ground cover in the back yard and the other flowering perennials out front so it looks nice for passers by. But you will have to spend a bit of time there like maybe a few hours on a Saturday morning...or whenever.
  • Do NOT dig up the bulbs. They will come up by themselves and will pop right through any ground cover. They won’t cause you any additional work, I promise!
